Blog Entry 14 - Monaco, France

The additional city

When in Nice, one day we took the train to Monaco. It was a pretty short trip and exactly one day after the F-1 Prix, but as I apologize for making this blog so long, I won’t write about this but just post some pictures (once again, sorry for the long blog! I really hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it down)

Grand Prix, oh yeah!

I askedthe dealer to hold it for me

So many different things to be seen and so little time

Blog Entry 13 - Nice, France

The last stop

Nice has the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen. Once again this reminded me of Peru, since I live 5 minutes away from the beach over there and I used to practice many different water sports.          Thru ought this whole trip many things have change about myself, although I don’t see Europe as a future location for myself (although one should never say never) meeting so many different people and learning so much about this part of the world has made me realize how small the world is nowadays. With the globalization and many new business ideas about how to integrate pretty much everything I feel like being afraid or the unknown is no longer something that will affect me. From now on I will embrace it as a new opportunity and try to get the most out of it. I only have words of appreciation and I feel really thankful for UTD for giving me the opportunity of making this trip, as well as all the people who could make it possible, you Monica, Michelle, Lisa, Joanna, Dr. Moore and possibly many other who I cannot remember at the moment. The effort this trip must have taken was enormous I bet, but pretty much well worth it.

Nice, here I go! (technically "we" but Tyler was in another section of the train)

Now I know why this beach is so famous

Simply beautiful

What if you could walk this way every single day?

Some friends we made at the Hostel! A couple from the UK, and those two girs were from Chile and Italy

Blog Entry 12 - Geneva, Switzerland

It’s all about the money

As we had already been to Geneva a couple of days ago as part of the UTD trip, this time we went to a different part of the city. Misael joined us today since his flight was leaving out of the airport here and the three of us walked all along the river and enjoyed a very pleasant weather. Geneva is a very beautiful but expensive city. We didn’t explore much of the city since we were all really tired from the previous days. We tried to go to a restaurant but everything was so expensive! Every course was around 30 or 40 francs. We ended up finding a small Middle East place which sold food starting from 8 francs. The food was really good but I preferred not to eat much and just wait for tomorrow’s breakfast at the hostel. So far I’ve been impressed by how all the hostels we’ve stayed in have been very safe and nice. People are really open and happy to share stories or just have a pleasant conversation with a stranger. When walking thru Geneva we found the park we went to a couple of days ago, and I had the chance to play chess with a stranger. Although I lost I felt like it was a good game, my father taught me how to and we used to play a lot many years ago. Having the chance to play again brought back many nice memories from my past which made me appreciate all the things I’ve been thru so far. Because of this and since the trip is almost over I felt a little nostalgic but happy because of all the experiences and knowledge I’ve gained so far. Not just business knowledge but also all the things I’ve discovered about myself.

I haven't posted a selfie in a while, this seems the right time (After seeing this pic I feel like I need to shave)

A small bridge we found with some locks in it, the locks made me remember Paris.

Enjoying the view!

Walking arround the Lake Leman, also known as Lake Geneva

I so envy the owner of that house, right in front of the lake!

A beach we found, it was nice to see the sunset from there.

Another shot of the Lake, simply amazing how

I know I've said this many times in this blog, but simply amazing!

I felt like every single place we sat was worth a picture

Waiting for our train for Nice!

Blog Entry 11 - Lyon, France; Day 7

Lyon, we will meet again!

As not many people came to class today, I felt like this was the best class in the whole trip. We talked about stereotypes and perceptions in a comfortable and open environment where we were pretty much all internationals. We had really interesting conversations and learned why French people like to discuss so much. They are taught a lot of different things in school and always have an opinion. The teach explained this is why you can have a smart conversation with virtually every French person because. Some people leave because there are not a lot of jobs, and something I found particularly strange is the fact that the government helps unemployed people for up to 3 years with 70% of the salary, and most people abuse of this. Something has to be done. Something I noticed about the Chinese professor was that she was very funny but at the same time very direct and straight with her lessons, I think someone with her could teach wherever she wanted, but as she explained she chose to stay in France because of her husband and the kids they are now raising. After the class we went back to the hotel and prepared to leave for Geneva, (Yes, I'm well aware we've already gone there as a class, but I feel like there is still a side of Geneva I don't know) as that is the next stop for our trip with Tyler.

I absolutely loved this class!

What a great teacher!

One last look at the Plaza next to our Hotel

In the train, on our way to Geneva!

Blog Entry 10 - Lyon, France (Geneva, Switzerland); Day 6

Wake up!

I woke up so early  my eyes burn a little. Not even coffee is working for me right now. I have no issues staying up until late, but somehow waking up early is not my thing. We went to Geneva and weren’t asked for our passports when passing the border, I found this a little amusing.
We got to CERN and I found this to be one of the best visits of the trip, not only I felt like they were really serious about the visit, this place was awesome. It’s one of those places where dreams meet reality and the phrase “anything is possible” is somehow true. If you can dream it you can do it, that’s what one of the guys said and seemed pretty convinced of it. They have lots of students doing projects in there and they try to barely supervise them as the students develop all sorts of skills along the way. For the first time I feel like this is a place where I could actually work and not feel like I’m working, but I’m doing what I love, I’ll try to send my resume when I get back to Dallas and just hope for the best!
There is not much to say about the United Nations but wow. Every room we entered was more beautiful than the previous one and there were people from all over the world. Our guide was really nice and explained to us the origin of every single statue and painting as well as the life of the painter or sculptor. I felt a little overwhelmed by the beauty of the building and discovered how much I enjoy this type of things. I guess museums and art gallerias will be part of my weekends from now on once we go back to Dallas.
After the UN we went to the Red Cross museum, at first I didn’t like much, but the more I walked thru it, read and heard the different testimonials I felt really moved. I remember standing in one of the rooms and dropping a couple of tears after listening to one guy from Rwanda. There were a lot of stories and these made me realize how many different people I know but how little I actually know about them, for instance, I’ve been studying with the cohorts for over a year but I feel like I know well less than a handful of people.

After the Red Cross museum we walked around the city for a while and eventually went back, the sight from the bus was really beautiful, and as we were being driven back I took a small nap. I remember I actually dreamed of a world full of smiles and without the horrors I saw in the Red Cross Museum.

That's how CERN welcomed us! Thnx for everything

Blog Entry 9 - Lyon, France; Day 5

<Insert clever tittle here>

We had to choose on whether to go to the History museum or the Science Museum, I chose the Science museum but was somehow disappointed, the Museum was nice but not what I expected (although after seeing the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Louvre Museum in Paris and many other it was really hard to meet my expectations). We saw different art of the Asian culture, Indian culture, the first Antarctica explorers and a nice animal exhibition about dinosaurs and many other extinct animals. At this point I’m realizing how small the Hispanic culture is (at least in Europe) since I haven’t seen anything about any of the South American countries. This is somehow equivalent to what happens down there, since when I was learning about history in Peru we were taught mostly the Hispanic culture and the European culture in a very broad manner.
After the museum we went back to the Hostel, I joined some of the Chinese students on the way back as we took the train together and it started to rain. Luckily one of them had an umbrella and we ended up being 3 people using the same umbrella, it was a funny experience.

On this day we also went back to Emlyon for another class. This time it was about the European Union and how the richer countries inject money into this union so the poorer countries can improve and catch up in the economy related topics. I found this really interesting, as this has been tried in South America in the past but have not really being successful. A lot of times there are hidden interests or historical issues which were never properly forgotten so jealousy and resentment are sometimes a big part of the business and political decisions in South America. Although this is something that is not so usual nowadays, I can’t stop but feeling Europe is light years ahead of us in this matter. Tomorrow we have to wake up at 5 to go to Geneve, so as great as this day has been, it’s now time to set my alarm and go to bed.

Outside the Science Museum

Part of a collection of small sculptures.

Another part of the collection, really awesome!

In the Asian culture this character has a thousand arms!

Nothing special about this, I just liked this giraffe.
