Blog Entry 2 - Antwerp, Belgium

The International Village

Antwerp is one of the nicest and most beautiful cities I had the chance to visit. At first I thought of Antwerp as a pit stop between Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris eventually but I was very wrong. People in Antwerp love 2 things: their fries, which are the crunchiest fries I’ve ever had (apparently they fry them twice and also add some ‘magic ingredient’ according to the person who sold them to us to achieve this level of perfection) and their beer. The night life is very active and while talking to some locals I noticed they refer to Antwerp as “T Stad”, it sort of translate to “THE city”, since for them there is no other place as Antwerp. They also like to joke around saying that the rest of Belgium is just parking space when compared to Antwerp; something which I guess makes the rest of Belgium people a little mad. I have never thought of myself as an extremely social person, but I feel like in Europe so far is a lot easier to approach to an stranger for a random conversation than it is in America. They have a pretty big biking culture, but not as big as Amsterdam and overall are really friendly people. So far I’ve miserably failed when trying to say anything in French, but I found out most people will speak English if you just explain you cannot speak French and not feel offended by it in any way, they actually take it with humor and have fun trying to teach you how to pronounce something and then laughing when you can’t. It’s a beautiful city and you can pretty much walk anywhere in Antwerp as the city is considerably smaller than Amsterdam and most other cities as I’ve asked around.

One of the displays in the Fashion Museum. Really an amazing place.

The Cathedral, an absolutely astonishing place

A beautiful view from the stop of the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom)

Antwerp’s train station, one of the most gorgeous train stations in Europe.
